Science was brought alive at Northumberland Park last week. It was kicked off with Mrs Christopher in staff briefing using the Van Der Graff generator to make all her hair stand on end; she managed to give a small electric shock to Ms Shah for revenge.

Year 11 made the Human Bubble in their assembly, which was led by Ria, Jakub, Kimberley and Natasha M – they even got Ms Bailey inside to make an even bigger bubble. Munira, Maconde and Dilem were a regular feature in assemblies as our Year 11 Scientists. Year 9 students Khalid, Hanna, Nazifa, Amina and Tatyana demonstrated and explained the Science behind the experiments.

Every day there was a new treasure hunt with challenging questions. It was a highly competitive competition with more and more students entering each day. The winners were Liam, Rozeta and Sunita in Year 7 and Dilem and Sally in Year 11, Cheniah and Aliya in Year 10 won the Numeracy and Literacy activity and prizes were given out for effort to Eren (Year 7), Jade and Jun- Yu (Year 8) who had entered more than once.

Congratulations to all students that participated in the competitions – you are all winners!

Dr Fapahunda carried out exciting dissections on the balcony – he was met by crowds of students watching him slice into a heart, eye, lung, kidney and whole fish.

On Thursday, room F16 had a queue of students experimenting with Methane bubbles with Mr Catsis; students queued up several times to light their hands on fire.

The amazing Science technicians prepared and carried out exciting demonstrations every lunch time, which included making exciting and magnificent elephant toothpaste to setting off high flying water rockets.

Nazifa Zaman in 9K said ‘ I really enjoyed doing Science week assemblies. The experiments we did were very interesting. My favourite part was asking the teachers for a £5 note and then burning it’.

We hoped Science week inspired and challenged students to think about Science outside of the classroom and encouraged them to want to find out more.

Some of literature’s greatest characters were brought to life when pupils and staff at a school   in Tottenham celebrated World Book Day.

More than 80 members of staff at Northumberland Park Community School, in Trulock Road, dressed as characters from their favourite books on Thursday, March 6.

During each lesson, students read an extract from a short story and took part in literacy competitions.

The day tied in with the school’s book week, which is now in its sixth year.

Headteacher Monica Duncan said: “The school places a great deal of importance on literacy and it was great to see the whole school engaged in such a fun but informative activity.

“Many students discovered texts and characters that weren’t familiar to them.”

Year 9 pupil Megan Munns, who dressed as Beetle Juice, said: “This was my best costume yet, it’s been a great day.”

The school hopes to raise several hundred pounds for the charity during its sponsored readathon.
